Its hard to write a blog with your eyes closed

I have actually managed to fall asleep whilst working on my computer before now but I have reached one of those points where I can't manage all the things I planned to do tonight.

As usual for the day before the event, I shall be off work tomorrow preparing for the website but I have twice as many hours to fill as exist.

I'll be blogging on and off through the day.

With two laptops and a desktop at my disposal tomorrow, what I really need to is master the act of using more than one at once like I do with my video and still camera.

Easier to see other people's mistakes than your own

Whilst spotting an error in the Parish Walk stats printed elsewhere, I realised that I had made a mistake myself in a recent blog when I said that David Collister was heading for his 25th finish instead of his 26th.

I am lucky though - online you can correct your mistakes.

Now you see it, now you don't

The eagle eyed among you will have seen that a preview of the Parish Walk appeared briefly on iomtoday this morning. It has now gone.

I contacted sports editor John Watterson about a small part of the report and he quickly had the whole article removed as it was not due for publication until tomorrow when the Manx Independent is published.

Mobile reporting ready to go

I am writing this on my laptop this morning using a mobile connection supplied by Manx Telecom.

I am also picking up one of two laptops to be supplied by Colebourns tonight. This will allow me to increase the numbe of photos and videos I can upload at any one time.

It really is great to have the technology. I used to have to return home to upload photos and wouldn't even dream of having videos.

What happened to the first ever Clerical Medical numbers

Before the days of a dedicated committee to organise the Parish Walk, the late Arthur Jones used to do the vast majority of the organisation.
I was asked to find a sponsor however and made a number of committments to CMI that I thought I had best carry out myself. I made myself unpopular by sticking rigidly to a one week closing date but for the first time all entrants received the entry pack through the post on the Monday morning, two days after the close of entries.
But I have to admit that I took on too much and I was knackered by the time event started and even (very dangerously) nodded off at the wheel.
The evening I brought the first ever set of professionally manufactured numbers home (the previous ones were hand made by Arthur out of old lino) I dumped the box in the hallway together with the computer equipment from Skanco.
Time for a cup of tea.
When I went back into the hall I found that Ben had found a new toy and the numbers were scattered all over the hall! They had been in number order too!

David Collister added to old features page

It was only when compiling the mini-feature below that I realised that I had not added the links to the feature I did on David Collister the week before the event last year to the old features page.

That has now been rectified.

You can also link directly from here:

http://www.parishwalk.co.uk/2008prerace/Current%20Features.htm

There are now 14 featured walkers and you can see the next one on 1 December.

The features are not intended to be a list of the fastest to the slowest or most finishers to least, but rather a cross section of the people for who the Parish Walk is a major part of their year.

David Collister heads for number 26

One of the things that struck me when analysising David Collister's remarkable 25 consecutive finishes is the way that despite his consistency he has fallen down the field as the number of finishers has increased.

In 1995 he was 8th with 21:04:32. In 2007 he was 22 seconds faster for 80th place!

The Clerical Medical Parish Walk magazine 2009

This is another big step in the status of the Parish Walk.

John Constandinou, the new editor of the Race Walking Record, is producing a special edition for the event. As far as I am aware, this has never been done before for any event in the history of the publication.

And its only costing £2.50 or you can even have five copies (spread them among your friends) for £10.

Find out all about it and order your copies here:

Order a special publication

One of the best parts of this, although John only had a few weeks to organise it, is that by using Michael George as a link to the organising committee he has ensured that the publication has the blessing of the event and he has worked hard to strengthen the links with the event sponsors.

On occasions organisations have suggested producing special products that would undermine the massive investment by Clerical Medical and Manx Telecom.

The message is, if you want to be associated with the event for commercial reasons you must contact the organisers in good time, preferably now for 2010.

BBC to feature walker

I've just been supplying statistics and an old photo of a well known Parish Walker for a feature on the BBC website. Watch this space. Or more precisely, watch the BBC local website in the next day or two.

Final feature goes live

Edmund Shillabeer is the final walker to be featured and the feature is now live.

Bizarre statistic

Here is something that only a statistician would pick up on.

Colin Moore, well known by Peel Football Club supporters for his statistics sent me this one a few months ago - even I would not pick up on this!

On the list of all time fastest times:

between 58 and 62 (Willie Corkill to Joe Brown) - all won (over a span of 38 years 1963-2001)

between 69 and 72 (Chris Flint to brother Martin) - all won (over a span of 38 years 1961-1999)

Final featured walker article drafted

Tonight I have spent all evening compiling an article on the 7th and final featured walker of the year.

I had so much material for the feature that I had put off the difficult part of choosing and editing the content for three months. I certainly didn't want to say that it would definitely happen but now that it is drafted I am pleased that I did.

Hopefully it will be reviewed and published in the next 24 hours.

Update your entry

I've just added the missing shortcut on the front page to:

https://www.sportident.co.uk/entries/login/login.php

Lots of users

339 different people accessed the website yesterday compared to 224 on the Sunday before the walk last year.

Usage peaked at 7,510 users on the Saturday race day last year.

Record holder to provide information

Clerical Medical Parish Walk record holder Sean Hands, pictured above on his way to that record in 2006, is to be on hand at the finish on Saturday evening / Sunday morning to provide a help facility for supporters.

He will be using one of the Colebourn sponsored laptops to to access the Manx Telecom timing system provided by SportIdent.

A second laptop will provide rolling statistics onto a large screen.

Final update page

I have this morning added a final update page to the website which will carry final reminders during the week:

I've started with the plans for Rushen Church which I posted on the www. manxathetics.com site six weeks ago.

Dru Hamm returns to the Parish Walk

There is a good story about Dru at:

http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/Brave-Dru-defies-doctors-to.5358535.jp

I've also got a good personal story about Dru's determination which I shall try and bring you this week.

A lull but please be patient

I have an awful lot of things to squeeze on the site (and one or two things to do apart from websites) so bear with me.

This week has not been made any easier by the events at http://www.manxathletics.com/

Programme

I've just added a pdf copy of the programme for anyone not yet in possession of hard copy.

You can download it from www.parishwalk.com/2009/PW09prog.pdf

Its quite alarge file (6MB) so it would be helpful if you download a copy and save a copy to your PC or laptop rather than opening a new copy on serveral occasions. Thanks.

Please note, that I am not in anyway reponsible for the content so please do not contact me about the programme.

Last five years at an all time high

There have been 47 Parish Walks in the modern era. In case you had not previously noticed or read, there was no event in 1965 or 1966.

Taking each five year block of winning times within the most recent 45, the average winning time during the five years ending 2008 was 40 minutes faster than an other period:

Did you know that the Parish Walk was to be held on Thursday 18 June?

The weather has been fantastic in the Isle of Man during the past few days. It would be too hot if the Parish Walk had been held today. Despite the awful weather last year I don't think that walkers would have been slowed as much as they would be by extreme heat.
I've been back running in the early mornings and the weather couldn't be better for that.
In the evening too. I went for a walk with Marie around town last night and we continued the game started by a famous walker and his family a few years ago of trying to work out which of the brisk walkers are training for the Parish Walk.
But we met one entrant who was training on ice cream. You may remember Geoff Kinvig (above) being pictured with Robbie Callister and Sean Hands at a feeding station in the End to End Walk a couple of years ago. He has walked to Peel and Ballaugh in the last couple of years and hopes to make it "up North" this year.
We took some light refreshment and overheard a barman talking about the Parish Walk to one of the customers. I think he was complaining about the prospect of the roads being blocked somewhere by "thousands" of walkers. The customer asked him when the walk was held and he said: "As far as I know its on Thursday 18 June".
He shouldn't have any problems with the roads being blocked then!

I have just finished compiling and editing the sixth special feature of the 2009 Clerical Medical Parish Walk website.

Caroline Cain feature

I've just published the latest featured walker article about Caroline Cain. I hope that you find her story inspiring.

Here is another of Bill Dale's photos that I borrowed from Caroline to scan. Its from the 2006 event. Caroline (121) was forced to retire at Bride after finishing the previous year. The sickness that caused her to pull out was later found to be caused by a base of skull tumour.

Time is up for Eammon

I have spent the day in the company of five times Parish Walk finisher Eammon Harkin (pictured above) today. We travelled together to a meeting at Manchester Airport and I warned him that, quite against the rules, I had already decided that (provided I am listed as a judge as usual) I may have to disqualify him in the event this year.
This predetermined course of action arises from a promise I made to him a few years ago. Apparently, I said that if he ever beat my time of 16.19 from 1978, I would make a comeback.
Well despite having surgery just a few months ago, there is a chance that Eammon could be on course to get there or thereabouts.
But do I want to make a comeback? No thanks! Besides, I have the website to attend to.
What Eammon hadn't realised was that he had given superficial evidence that his walking style is suspect. He told me how busy he had been in the past couple of weeks and added: "My feet haven't touched the ground since I came back from Ireland".

Parish Walk Poll update

I started using the bravenet site for the poll last night but the first two votes cast were blank so I quickly suspended it before everyone got tearful and sent me loads of emails!

Another poll appeared for about five minutes at lunchtime today but again the vote casting was a problem.

Third time lucky the new one seems to be working well.

Its only a bit of fun of course so I shall close it tomorrow evening. Its a free one and I can restrict voting to once a day, once a month etc but can't do anything more sophisticated than that.

Poll

There is a poll on the manxathletics.com site to find out who the punters think is going to win.

It will only be open for 24 hours as although I set the settings to restrict one vote person it seems to reset after 24 hours.

The colour is supposed to the same as the site colour (green) but it is still showing in red. Oh well, it will only be there for 24 hours!

Overseas walkers

I'll work out how many British residents there are another time but these are the few from outside the Isle of Man or UK:

Netherlands - 2

Rep of Ireland - 2

Austria - 1

Spain - 1

United Arab Emirates 1

More women than men

I was unoffcially tracking the balance of the entry between men and women and knew that it was fairly even.

Not that I have the official data (thanks to Karen Kneale) I can confirm that there are 821 women and 799 men.

More stats to follow - maybe one or two tonight but mainly another day.

Important message about seeding

I've just added the following to the website:

http://www.parishwalk.co.uk/Information.htm#Seeding

Final entry confirmed

I received an email from committee member Karen Kneale last night who has done so much good work on the database of entries over a number of years. Until three years ago she used to be the one inputting every single entry.

She has confirmed the final entry at 1620 with 161 seeded walkers.

More stats to follow over the next few days.

Best surface in event history

I saw the Isle of Man at its best last night when I went with Marie for a walk through Ballaglass Glen (or Mum's favourite glen as it was always called in our house).

I forgot to take my camera to capture the bluebells and the full colur of the glen. Or to photograph the wonderful surface of the road for the final three quarters of a mile before Parish Walkers rejoin the main road. I had meant to comment the last time I saw it to not the resurfacing.

We often speculate about how much harder it was for the walkers in the 60s and they would not have dreamt of such a smooth surface. Mind you, having spoken this morning with a five times finisher who walked over the course from Ramsey to Douglas at the weekend, I understand that some of the footpaths (out of Ramsey and the Dhoon to Laxey) are in a dreadful state and whereas in the old days walkers were able to walk well into the road, this is not always possible now.

Record entry confirmed

Karen Kneale (many thanks Karen) emailed me as soon as she got back from the committee meeting last night to confirm that there is, after all, a record entry.

The number stands at 1620 with a couple more queries. There were obviously a number of entries that hadn't been processed and were not therefore on the list.

I have been struggling this morning (in between a short run) to try and compare the differences but had a few problems with names with more than one field. There should be another 90 names but I have 96 so some of these have previously been reported. It does include a lot more of the previous finishers:

Record Holder to miss Parish Walk

When I was tracking the entries yesterday morning I couldn't help notice that record holder Sean Hands was missing from the list although I have seen him out training a few times.

So I telephoned him to try avoid speculation. I left a message on his answerphone and he kindly returned my call later in the day.

He confirmed that he will not be taking part.

He has had further injury problems since last year and, although he kept his options open until quite late, he didn't want to risk a third retirement in a row.

After a fantastic year in 2006 when he set the Parish Walk record and retained the National 100 Miles title, Sean admitted that he did not prepare so well for the defence of his title. But he ended up walking at the front of the field with Robbie Callister, where he was expected to be seen. As a result he retired.

Last year was completely different. He was in even better shape than in 2006 and after I interviewed him the week before the Parish I thought that another record was possible. As he took a minute a mile out of the field going over the Sloc I thought that this was a sign of this. But of course it was far too quick and the effort required to walk at that speed in those conditions aggravated his injuries too.

He made some amends later in the year with victory in the End to End Walk and it is to that event that he will now turn his attention.

But first that most modest of sportsman will be lining up at the start of the Parish Walk - to help with the marshaling!

Apologies for typo

I was cross with myself yesterday as having spent all morning tracking the final entries I posted an update to the front page at 1 second past midday meaning to say that "Entries have now closed" but I typed "not" instead of "now".

I apologise for any confusion I caused.

BUT.

It also said immediately below: "Although the entry list is subject to final confirmation (due to a couple of technical problems) no late entries will be accepted under any circumstances. Entries for the 2010 Clerical Medical Parish Walk open on 1 December 2009 - don't be late next time."

I keep harking on that entries had been open for 161 days (clearly stating when they closed) and yet people were still trying to enter after the deadline and trying to use my error as an excuse. Pathetic.

Walkers have completed 35% of all laps

This calculation is certainly prone to possible error (in particular of there is even the slightest variation in entered name eg David to Dave), but I calculate that 429 laps have been completed by this year's entrants - that is 35% of the 1213 laps ever. This is definitely my last stat of the day (half of it has gone already) so here are the previous finishers:

Nearly half of last year's finishers fail to return

I must stress that these calculations are entirely unofficial. I may have made errors or some of those that finished last year maybe among those with a problem still to be added. But it would appear that 54 of the 122 that finished last year have not returned this year. There will always be a certain number of "one offs" and there will always be a few drawing the curtain on their Parish Walk careers, but I would if the weather last year was a factor.

A few of the names listed below are now taking part in other branches of the sport of athletics but there are a few that I shall really miss like Rosemarie Crellin.

Adam Russell
Alan Brew
Alan Cowin
Alan Kinvig
Andy Harrison
Anita Costain
Antony Atkinson
Chris Moon
Chris Walker
Christopher Burn
David Chambers
David Churcher
David Whittam

Michelle Stevens
Neil Towers
Nikki Boyde
Patrick Crowe
Patrick Hartley
Patrick Reid
Paul Kennish
Paul Malone
Paul Phillips
Peter Bradley

Richard Spenceley
Rosemarie Crellin
Stefan Dunajewski
Stephen Brew
Stephen O'Hare
Steve Taggart

There must have been a slight time delay

I took the list at midday precisely but there is now one more added (1530)

Katherine Gatherer

They must use Ebay

One of the final six entries went through in the last five minutes taking the total to1529. Remember that there will be a few extra names added later in the day from people who entered on time but their entries were lost. There will definitely be no futher entries accepted:

Adrian Kinrade
Ben Tang
Claire Cavanagh
Joanne Taylor
Samantha Kinrade
Yvonne Ward

So much for all the planning I was going to do this morning

I've spent most of the morning doing this stuff!

15 minutes to go and the scores or the doors reach 1523.

Just time for some stretching before the closedown.

Here are the latest:

Katie Wilkinson
Mark Raisbeck
Sarah Marsh
Sharon Lunt

Doesn't quite add up

I've added a further 5 names in the last 15 minutes but the new total is 1519:

Barnaby Lockyer
Emma Wilkinson
Gail Corrin
Graham Cregeen
Mark Edge

9 more between 11 and 11.15 (1515)

Annette Lewis
Ben Bryan
Cara Wilkinson
Helen Bryan
Jan Kirkman
Laura Bryan
Lucy Charnick
Paul Gale
Sharon Lund

Entry list incomplete

I've just spoken to Gordon Corran, husband of race secretary Elizabeth who is busy this morning with the Manx Youth Games.

There are still a few additional entries to be added to the database and so the list that appears at 12 today will not be the final one.

When I made the call there were 1505 entries. I refreshed the page as I was talking to Gordon and it had increased to 1508.

Although this is exciting following the final entries, it flabbergasts me that people wait for five and half months to enter (everyone who entered last year received a text on 1 December 2008; the website was launched on 1 December 2008 and the media publicity followed soon after) and then run into technical problems.

There is a definite message for next year. Get your entry in much earlier and then you have time to sort things out without the stress that it causes if your credit card won't work or you have some other problem.

On a scale of 1 to 10 my sympathy for the entrants is 1. On the same scale, my sympathy for the unpaid workers sorting out the problems it is 10.

A hour to go and its now 1505

Aneisha Kennaugh
Colin Moore
Gill Young
Keith Wilkinson
Marco Lavender
Rachel Gawne
Sharon Whitehouse

4 more with 90 minutes to go

Damien Briggs
Rebecca Briggs
Sophie Robinson
Susan Fargher

Just over 2 hours to go and its up to 1494

Although it looks as if one person has entered twice:

Ann-Marie Murphy
Dawn Radcliffe
George Harker
Ivor Stanley
Jim O'Neill
Jo Hailey
Jodie O'Neill
Kate McHugh
Leanne Woodbridge
Leanne Woodbridge

4 in the last hour

Andrea Kane
George Asare-Aidoo
Marie O'Connell
Tim Crookall

There are now 1480

I'm having a "Parish Walk" morning as I prepare a few things for future website coverage so I shall be at my computer and will keep you informed of the latest entrants every hour or two this morning. Here are the latest:

Latest entries

Its taken me a little longer to compile than I would have liked because the new entrants plus the original entrants came to one more than the current list. The reason was that someone had amended their Christian name so I had counted him twice!

Nearly 7 times as many walkers reached Santon compared to 1993

1993 was the first year that 200 people reached Santon. How things have changed - last year 1385 got that far. Even with electronic timing that made it pretty busy!

Slightly more men

My latest calculations indicate that the 594 entries are from 302 men and 292 women.

The calculations are unofficial and dependent upon the flag I enter against each name on my working spreadsheet rather than from the full official database.

Approaching 600

Can we get another 6 signup up to day to make it a good Friday and lift the entries to 600?

Here are the latest three:

Get to the finish just before 5 am

If you want to see the person with the average winning time, that is when you should be there. During the past year, the average finishing time has varied very little:

2006
20:54:28

2007
20:58:42

2008
20:57:23

It is 1995 since the average was less than 20 hours.

Publicity increases - website hits go down!

I always thought that the publicity generated from the newspaper adverts for the Clerical Medical Parish Walk would see the hits on the website increase. But strangely, this week (when the adverts appeared) the number of "unique users" was at its lowest for a month. The average per day for the whole year is 89. I can only conclude that people already have the event fixed in their minds.
